MAJOR DIVISION OF THE POPULAR AND INDIGENOUS CULTURE
Its fundamental mission is to contribute to the creation and construction of the proper conditions and instruments for an intercultural dialogue to respectfully and harmoniously express the cultural abundance and diversity of our country. Its goals are to encourage the preservation and diffusion of the popular, indigenous, urban and rural manifestations and, mainly, to direct the necessary resources for its development as a unique and institutional entity. The vision that supports its function is that of a country with intercultural relationships based in the dialogue, the appreciation for the diversity of its communities and the strengthening of its cultural patrimony; a country that acknowledges and fully respects the cultural and ethnic differences among its people; a country that works to eradicate the discrimination against the "different". In order to achieve its goals this governmental institution counts with the necessary space at the Museo Nacional de Culturas populares (National Museum for the Popular Cultures) and the Centro de Información y Documentación (Center for Information and Documentation); it also receives the collaboration of the 19 regional units of popular culture (unidades regionales de cultura popular), located in the states of Baja California, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Durango, Guerrero, Michoacan, Morelos, Nuevo Leon, Oaxaca (4), Puebla, Queretaro, Sonora, Veracruz (3) and Yucatan. Created in 1978, The Major Division of the Popular an Indigenous Culture, DGCPI, as part of the National Counsel for the Arts and Culture ( Consejo Nacional para la Cultura y las Artes), has been promoting the study, conservation, diffusion and development of the popular and native culture of the country for the last 29 years.
